The tools available to creative professionals have long forced an uncomfortable choice. Corporate-style project management applications offer structure but feel too rigid for the fluid nature of creative work. Note-taking apps provide flexibility but lack the organization needed as projects grow in complexity. Social media planning tools exist in isolation, disconnected from the broader creative process. The result is a fragmented workflow where valuable ideas get lost between platforms.
Jamie Stone experienced these frustrations firsthand in her work within the creative industry. She envisioned DEVY as a platform where creatives could finally feel organized without sacrificing their creative flow, a tool that simplified the chaos and allowed them to focus on what they do best: create. DEVY would provide customizable folder and note management, rich media support including handwritten annotations, social media feed planning, and posting schedule management with device widget integration. To bring this vision to life, Jamie partnered with Chop Dawg to design a comprehensive non-functional prototype that captures every aspect of the user experience, ready to demonstrate to stakeholders and serve as the foundation for future development.
Before DEVY, creative professionals struggled with tools that were never designed for them. Project management applications borrowed from corporate environments imposed workflows that felt foreign to the creative process. Simple note-taking apps worked for capturing ideas but became unwieldy as projects grew more complex. Social media planning existed as a completely separate concern, requiring yet another tool and another context switch. The mental overhead of managing multiple platforms drained energy that should have been devoted to creative work.
DEVY needed to address multiple challenges simultaneously. Folder and note management had to be flexible enough to accommodate different organizational styles while scaling seamlessly as projects grew. Content within notes needed to support multiple formats including text, images, videos, audio, handwritten annotations, checklists, and social media links. Social media planning features had to help creators visualize their Instagram feeds before posting, with the ability to arrange and rearrange content until the aesthetic felt right. Posting schedules needed integration with device widgets so creators could see upcoming tasks without opening the app. A freemium model had to balance accessibility for new users with sustainable revenue through premium subscriptions. And the entire experience had to feel native to both iOS and Android platforms.
Designing a Platform That Thinks Like a Creative
From the very first conversation, we understood that DEVY’s success depended on designing an experience that felt natural to creative professionals. Working closely with Jamie Stone, we mapped every user journey from registration through folder creation, note management, social media planning, and posting schedule coordination. We defined how the folder hierarchy should support different organizational styles, how notes should accommodate diverse content types, and how the posting schedule should integrate with device widgets for at-a-glance visibility.
Figma served as our collaborative design hub where wireframes evolved into polished, high-fidelity screens that balanced comprehensive functionality with intuitive navigation. Weekly meetings kept both teams aligned as we iterated on complex features like the handwritten annotation tools, Instagram feed mockup functionality, and the freemium subscription model. User journey mapping ensured that every interaction felt purposeful and every feature supported the creative workflow. By the time the non-functional prototype was complete, it captured not just screens but the entire experience of using DEVY, ready for investor demonstrations, user testing, and the eventual transition to full development.
We designed a comprehensive non-functional prototype for iPhone and Android that demonstrates how DEVY will empower creatives to organize their work, capture ideas in multiple formats, and plan their social media presence.
DEVY’s organization system adapts to how creatives actually work. Users create folders with custom names and colors for visual differentiation, then reorder them through intuitive drag-and-drop interaction. Folders can be archived when projects conclude without permanent deletion, then unarchived if work resumes. Within folders, notes capture ideas in whatever format suits the moment. Users can type text, create interactive checklists and to-do lists, upload images and videos from the camera or photo library, record audio notes, and paste links to social media posts that open in the relevant app when tapped. The handwritten note and image annotation feature allows creators to sketch ideas or mark up visuals using touch input with selectable pen colors. Content within notes can be reordered, grouped under section headings, archived, or deleted as projects evolve. This flexibility ensures DEVY grows alongside its users rather than constraining them.
For content creators whose visual aesthetic matters, DEVY provides dedicated Instagram feed planning functionality. Users add images by capturing photos with the device camera or selecting from the photo library, then crop each image to fit Instagram’s square or portrait formats. The mock feed view displays images in the familiar Instagram grid layout, allowing creators to visualize how their content will appear to followers. Drag-and-drop reordering enables experimentation with different arrangements until the aesthetic feels right. Completed layouts can be saved as drafts with custom names for easy reference. Drafts can be reopened for continued editing, with the ability to add, delete, or rearrange images as creative direction evolves. The delete function includes confirmation prompts to prevent accidental loss of carefully curated layouts. This feature bridges the gap between content creation and social media presentation, bringing planning into the same platform where ideas originate.
DEVY helps creators stay consistent with their content through comprehensive posting schedule management. Users create scheduled posts by selecting dates and times, with support for recurring schedules and date ranges for regular content cadences. Each scheduled item can include a title, description, selected social media platforms, and association with specific folders or notes for easy reference to the content being posted. Push notifications remind users ahead of scheduled posting times, with actionable options to mark posts as completed or snooze them directly from the notification. The home screen widget brings visibility outside the app, displaying upcoming posts due today or within the week in multiple size options to fit user preferences. Widgets also provide quick access to current folders or notes, enabling rapid contributions without navigating through the full app. When posts are complete, users mark them as done, maintaining a clear record of publishing activity.
Beyond the creative workflow features, we designed subscription management and account settings that provide users with complete control over their DEVY experience while establishing a sustainable business model.
DEVY’s subscription functionality balances accessibility with sustainable revenue through a carefully designed freemium model. All new users receive a free trial period to experience premium features and understand DEVY’s full value. Premium subscribers gain unlimited folder and note creation, full access to the posting schedule feature with widget support, and the ability to archive folders, notes, and content for later reference. Free accounts after the trial period are limited to one folder with restricted notes and details, with archiving functionality disabled. Subscription options include monthly and annual plans with clearly outlined benefits for each tier. Payment processing utilizes Apple Pay for iOS and Google Pay for Android through platform-specific in-app purchase systems, ensuring compliance with App Store and Google Play guidelines. Users manage subscriptions through their device settings as required by platform policies, with clear information about current subscription status displayed within the app.
DEVY’s account settings provide users with comprehensive control over their personal information and account status. Users can update their email address and password with appropriate validation and security verification. Biometric authentication support enables Touch ID and Face ID on iOS and fingerprint or facial recognition on Android for quick, secure access to sensitive settings. Easy access to Terms of Service, Privacy Policy, and other legal documents ensures transparency about data handling. The logout function includes confirmation prompts and automatically disables Remember Me functionality for security. Account deactivation and deletion options inform users of consequences including data loss, require multiple confirmation steps to prevent accidental action, and comply with platform requirements and data protection regulations. These settings ensure users maintain complete control over their DEVY experience while the platform meets all necessary compliance standards.
Our partnership with Jamie Stone extended beyond screen design. We served as strategic advisors, helping make confident decisions about user experience, feature prioritization, and the path from prototype to production.
Together, we developed comprehensive user journey maps that informed every design decision. We created detailed user profiles representing DEVY’s target audience of creative professionals, understanding their pain points, workflow preferences, and expectations for digital tools. These profiles guided feature prioritization, ensuring that the most impactful capabilities received the most design attention. User flows mapped every interaction from app launch through complex workflows like creating annotated notes or planning Instagram feeds, identifying potential friction points and opportunities for delight. This user-centered approach ensured that DEVY would feel intuitive from the first interaction, reducing the learning curve that often frustrates creative professionals adopting new tools.
The clickable non-functional prototype created in Figma serves as a powerful tool for gathering feedback and demonstrating DEVY’s potential to investors and partners. Jamie selected key user journeys to develop into fully interactive paths, allowing stakeholders to experience the app’s core functionality without waiting for programming. The prototype demonstrates folder creation and management, note-taking with various content types, Instagram feed planning, and posting schedule configuration, all with realistic content and authentic interactions. This tangible demonstration of DEVY’s vision enables meaningful conversations with potential investors, generates actionable user feedback, and validates design decisions before development investment. The prototype serves as the definitive specification for eventual programming, ensuring development proceeds efficiently when Jamie is ready to move forward.
Beyond the application design, we created comprehensive brand assets to support DEVY’s market presence. Custom logo design went through low-fidelity exploration to high-fidelity refinement, resulting in an identity that embodies organization, creativity, and user-centricity. The final logo was delivered in every format needed for commercial use: black and white versions, full color, vector-based scalable formats, PNG and JPG for digital use, and raw design files for future modifications. App icon designs complement the logo while ensuring visual impact at small sizes, meeting both Apple App Store and Google Play Store requirements. Up to five custom marketing graphics showcase DEVY’s key features and value proposition, ready for app store listings that will captivate prospective users and communicate the app’s benefits effectively.
