ince April 8th, 2013, Buddy Project has been pairing teens and young adults with a buddy based on mutual interests and age. What started as a simple idea has grown into a global movement, with over 228,000 people signing up to find connection, companionship, and support. The organization focuses on children, teens, and young adults across the globe, providing positivity, resources, and education to reduce the stigma of mental illness, bullying, and negativity on social media.
One of the most substantial ambitions inside the Buddy Project organization was to replicate their mission through a digital platform. They envisioned a mobile app available on iPhone and Android devices that would match the same goals, ideas, and philosophies that have guided the non-profit for years. To bring this vision to life, Buddy Project partnered with Chop Dawg to design and develop a launch-ready application that pairs individuals of similar ages and interests with like-minded buddies, giving them a safe space to connect and be there for each other.
Before the app, Buddy Project operated through manual pairing processes that could not scale with their growing community. They needed a digital solution that could handle thousands of users while maintaining the personal touch that made their mission so effective. The application had to appeal to a wide demographic, from pre-teens through adults, while remaining lightweight, intuitive, and easy to use for all ages.
Above all, the application needed to be private and secure. Working with individuals under the age of eighteen years old meant following federal and state laws for collecting data on young adults and pre-teens. Robust safety features such as reporting needed to be built into the application from day one. The app required proper encryption and best data storage practices to protect vulnerable users. Additionally, Buddy Project needed a simple yet powerful administrator backend portal to manage their users, handle reports, control word censors, and maintain the safe environment their community depends on.
Building a Mission-Driven Platform from Concept to Launch-Ready Product
From the very first conversation, we understood that Buddy Project was more than an app. It was a lifeline for young people who needed connection and support. Working closely with the Buddy Project team, we mapped every user journey from registration through buddy matching, messaging, and profile management. We defined how the matching algorithm should prioritize shared interests while keeping ages in close proximity, how messaging should feel familiar yet secure, and what safety controls would protect users without creating friction.
Figma became our shared workspace as we iterated on onboarding flows, profile screens, buddy discovery interfaces, messaging threads, and administrative tools. In parallel, we formalized a technical approach centered on React Native for mobile, React for the web admin portal, Firebase and Google Cloud Platform for the backend, and Twilio for secure messaging. Through weekly UberConference meetings during design and bi-weekly meetings during programming, every decision stayed anchored to one core promise: this platform should feel safe, welcoming, and true to the Buddy Project mission.
We designed and developed iPhone and Android applications that transform how young people find companionship and support, creating meaningful connections built on shared interests, privacy, and trust.
Users create profiles that truly represent who they are. They can add a profile image and cover image, write a personal bio, share their location, and most importantly, list their interests. As users begin typing interests, the system populates matching suggestions from other users, displaying how many people worldwide share the same passions. If an interest has not been added before, users can create it for future buddies to discover. This interest-driven approach ensures that every match is built on genuine common ground.
The heart of Buddy Project is its matching algorithm. Users are shown their most compatible buddy based on shared interests, with the system also working to keep ages in close proximity whenever possible. Each recommended buddy displays their first name, profile image, cover image, shared interest count, total buddies connected, and registration date. Users can send a buddy request or skip to the next recommendation. To prevent abuse, the application limits how many buddy requests a user can send per week, ensuring the community remains genuine and intentional.
Once two users accept each other as buddies, they can communicate through dedicated message threads powered by Twilio. The messaging experience mirrors familiar apps like iMessage and WhatsApp, allowing users to share text, photos, and videos. Users can take new photos or videos using their camera or choose from their library. Every message displays delivery and read status, and users can delete their own previously sent messages. The interface remains lightweight and intuitive while providing the rich communication features young people expect.
Beyond the mobile experience, we developed a robust desktop administrative web application that gives the Buddy Project team complete control over their community without needing developers for day-to-day management.
Administrators can search all users by first name, last name, or email address. From the user management dashboard, they can manually update email addresses, trigger password reset emails, and modify profile information including name, birthday, location, bio, and interests. Administrators can view each user’s registration date, buddy list, message threads, and submitted reports. When necessary, they can manually remove buddies or take action on problematic accounts to maintain community safety.
All reports submitted by users flow into a dedicated moderation queue. For reported message threads, administrators can view who submitted the report, the date and time of submission, the reason selected, and the detailed description provided. They can access the corresponding message thread, select a user to ban from the application, delete the message thread entirely, or dismiss the report. For reported user profiles, the same information is available, allowing administrators to take swift action to protect the community.
The administrative backend provides full control over the interest system that powers buddy matching. Administrators can search all interests, rename existing interests, delete inappropriate ones, and add new interests manually. A dedicated word censoring feature allows administrators to add words that should be blocked from being posted as interests, edit existing censored words, and remove censors when appropriate. This gives Buddy Project complete control over the language and content that appears on their platform.
Our partnership with Buddy Project, Inc. extended far beyond design and development. We served as strategic advisors, helping the team make confident decisions about scope, safety features, legal compliance, and launch strategy so their mission-driven platform could succeed from day one.
Together, we designed every feature with user safety as the top priority. From age verification and parental consent workflows to robust reporting systems and word censoring, every decision considered the unique needs of young people seeking connection. We ensured the application followed federal and state laws for collecting data on minors while creating an experience that felt welcoming rather than restrictive. Safety features are seamlessly integrated so users feel protected without feeling monitored.
Throughout planning and development, we advised Buddy Project on how to combine React Native, React, Firebase, Google Cloud Platform, and Twilio in a way that meets the highest security and privacy standards. We helped define data encryption practices, secure authentication workflows, and compliant data storage approaches. Every technical decision was made with the understanding that protecting vulnerable users is not optional but essential to the platform’s mission and success.
Beyond the build itself, we prepared Buddy Project for a successful launch with fully compliant App Store and Play Store submissions, professional creative assets including social media graphics for Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, and detailed documentation for ongoing maintenance. We provided a ninety-day bug warranty and forty-five day maintenance period to ensure the team had the support they needed to succeed. The modular architecture ensures that as Buddy Project grows, new features can extend the platform without requiring a costly rebuild.
Our partnership with Buddy Project, Inc. was built on shared mission and transparent communication. Weekly UberConference meetings kept us aligned on priorities during design and quality assurance phases, while bi-weekly meetings during programming ensured steady progress without overwhelming the team. A dedicated project manager served as the direct point of contact, helping Buddy Project stay on target, on timeline, and organized throughout the months needed to complete the job. By the time Buddy Project headed toward launch, the platform reflected not just our technical expertise but the organization’s deep commitment to helping young people find connection and support.

Buddy Project now gives young people a safe, intuitive way to find buddies who share their interests and understand their struggles. The intelligent matching algorithm prioritizes genuine common ground while keeping ages in close proximity, ensuring every connection has the potential to become meaningful. Users discover buddies through a familiar swipe-style interface, communicate through secure messaging, and build relationships that can make all the difference during difficult times.
With robust age verification, parental consent workflows, encrypted messaging, comprehensive reporting tools, and word censoring controls, Buddy Project operates with the highest safety standards. The administrative backend gives the team complete visibility and control over their community, allowing them to respond quickly to reports and maintain the welcoming environment their users depend on. Every feature was designed with the understanding that protecting vulnerable young people is the foundation of the platform’s mission.
Because Buddy Project is built on a modern, modular stack with React Native, React, Firebase, and Google Cloud Platform, the platform is ready to grow alongside user demand. What started with over 228,000 sign-ups can now scale to support hundreds of thousands more. When Buddy Project decides to expand into new features, additional safety tools, or enhanced matching capabilities, the foundation is already in place. This is not just an app. It is the digital future of a movement dedicated to preventing suicide and promoting mental health awareness.
Chop Dawg has exceeded our expectations. They’re invested in the project and form strong connections with their clients.
