Transforming Skilled Trades Hiring Through Clarity and Speed with CraftCore

In heavy industrial and construction environments, hiring the right crew is not just important, it is urgent. Outage windows close, turnaround deadlines loom, and schedules shift without warning. Yet the tools available to connect skilled tradespeople with the employers who need them remain frustratingly inadequate. Workers waste time on vague postings and stale listings. Employers lose hours chasing incomplete profiles and missing certifications. Internal teams depend on developer tickets for simple taxonomy changes. CraftCore was conceived to replace this friction with one calm, trusted path from discovery to decision. By partnering with Chop Dawg, this vision became reality. We designed and developed a comprehensive hiring platform where candidates browse jobs without creating an account, filter by craft, level, certifications, pay, per diem, travel, schedule, and radius, complete guided profiles with document uploads, and apply with confidence in English or Spanish. Employers post roles with fields that match exactly what candidates filter by, review applications through a streamlined inbox, shortlist and rate candidates, and move them through a clear pipeline. Staff operate the entire platform through an administrative backend that requires no developer involvement for daily tasks.

When Hiring the Trades Becomes Fast and Transparent: Introduction to CraftCore

Finding skilled trades workers traditionally involves navigating job boards designed for office positions, scrolling through postings that omit critical details like per diem and travel pay, and submitting applications into systems where status updates never arrive. Employers face the inverse problem: incomplete candidate profiles, missing certifications, and no way to compare applicants against the specific requirements that matter in heavy industry and construction.

CraftCore reimagines trades hiring as a matching system where transparency benefits everyone. Candidates open the mobile app or web application, set a radius, select their craft and certification requirements, and immediately see relevant roles with clear wage, per diem, schedule, and requirement information. A short guided profile ensures document uploads and essential information are complete before the Apply button activates. Employers post jobs using the exact same fields candidates filter by, ensuring perfect parity between what is posted and what is discoverable. Applications flow into an inbox where shortlisting, status changes, internal notes, and structured ratings keep hiring teams aligned. Verification signals surface documents that have been reviewed and approved. The administrative backend empowers internal staff to approve employers, review candidate documents, moderate content, and manage the entire taxonomy of crafts, levels, certifications, and industries without writing a single line of code. To bring this vision to life, Chop Dawg designed and developed mobile applications for iPhone and Android, a responsive web application for candidates, a responsive Employer Web Portal, a desktop-first Administrative Web Application, and a WordPress marketing website.

Breaking Barriers to Impact: CraftCore's Need for Trade-Specific Hiring Infrastructure

Before CraftCore, skilled trades hiring operated on platforms designed for different industries entirely. Generic job boards lacked fields for per diem, travel pay, project duration, and hours per week. Postings omitted certification requirements or buried them in unstructured descriptions. Candidates could not filter by the criteria that actually mattered for their livelihood and lifestyle. Employers received applications without context about certifications, experience levels, or willingness to travel. Internal teams needed engineering help for every taxonomy change.

CraftCore needed to solve multiple challenges simultaneously. The filter system had to capture trade-specific criteria including craft, craft level, certifications, hourly wage, per diem, travel pay, project type, duration, hours per week, employment type, industry, and location radius while remaining fast and intuitive. Job posting fields had to match candidate filters one-to-one so search and discovery remained perfectly aligned. Guided profiles needed to enforce document uploads and essential information without creating friction. Verification workflows required administrative oversight without becoming bottlenecks. The employer pipeline had to support shortlisting, status changes, internal notes, tags, and structured ratings while keeping hiring teams aligned. Bilingual support in English and Spanish had to extend across all flows, notifications, and email templates. The administrative backend needed to give staff complete control over employer approval, document review, content moderation, and taxonomy management without developer dependency.

How We Worked Together

Building a Platform That Respects Both Candidates and Employers

From the very first conversation, we understood that CraftCore needed to create value for every participant in the hiring ecosystem. Working closely with the founding team, we mapped user journeys for candidates seeking work, employers seeking qualified applicants, and administrators operating the platform. We defined how filter criteria should align perfectly between candidate discovery and employer posting, how verification signals should build trust without creating friction, and how the pipeline should keep hiring teams moving at the pace outage and turnaround hiring demands.

Figma served as our collaborative design hub where wireframes evolved into polished, high-fidelity screens that balanced comprehensive functionality with intuitive navigation in both English and Spanish. Weekly meetings during design and bi-weekly meetings during development kept all teams aligned as we iterated on complex features like the one-to-one filter parity system, the guided profile with document enforcement, the employer applications inbox with structured ratings, and the administrative taxonomy management that updates mobile and web without code changes. In parallel, we formalized a technical approach centered on React Native for mobile applications, React for web applications and administrative portal, Node.js with Laravel for backend services, Firebase and Google Cloud Platform for infrastructure, Twilio for SMS verification, SendGrid for transactional emails, and Apple Maps on iOS and Google Maps on Android and web for location services. Through Slack, Jira, and Confluence, every decision stayed documented and accessible throughout the engagement.

Delivering Faster Hiring Through Trade-Specific Discovery and Transparent Requirements

We designed and developed mobile applications for iPhone and Android plus a responsive web application that transform scattered job searching into precise, geo-fenced discovery where candidates know exactly what is required before they apply.

Trade-Specific Filters with Perfect Posting Parity

CraftCore centers the candidate experience around filters designed specifically for how the trades hire. Candidates search and filter by craft, craft level, certifications required, hourly wage, per diem, travel pay, project type, duration, hours per week, employment type, industry, and location radius with results updating instantly as selections change. A millwright on a job break sets a 50 mile radius, selects their level, toggles per diem, and sees relevant roles in seconds. A pipefitter widening their search filters for travel pay and TWIC required to find opportunities worth the commute. Open shop versus closed shop designation, shift type including day, night, and rotating, bonuses for completion or safety, education reimbursement benefits, equipment requirements, and years of experience all function as both posting fields and candidate filters. This one-to-one parity between what employers post and what candidates filter ensures the jobs employers create are immediately discoverable by qualified candidates. Saved searches and recent search chips enable returning to previous queries quickly. The architecture ensures CraftCore serves the trades with the precision generic job boards cannot provide.

Guided Profile with Document Uploads and Verification Signals

CraftCore ensures candidates present themselves effectively through a guided profile system that enforces completeness before applications can be submitted. Required fields include name, headshot, physical address, email, and phone. Trade profile details capture craft and craft level, years of experience, certifications and licenses, availability, willingness to travel, and wage expectations through structured pickers and chips that ensure data quality and filter compatibility. Document uploads accept resume PDFs and certification images with file type and size validation, upload status indicators, and re-upload options if administrators flag issues. The Apply button remains disabled until required items are complete, with clear indicators showing what is missing and one-tap links to complete outstanding items. Once administrators review and approve documents through the backend, verification signals such as Certifications Verified appear to employers in the pipeline. Candidates see read-only status indicators and guidance if additional information is needed. This guided approach ensures every application employers receive is complete and ready for evaluation.

Clear Job Detail with Requirements Checklist and Bilingual Support

CraftCore presents every job posting with the clarity candidates need to decide quickly whether to apply. Job detail screens display title, employer name, location with map context, wage, per diem, travel pay, craft and level, certifications required, project type, duration, hours per week, employment type, industry, benefits, and any special notes the employer has added. A requirements summary presents a concise checklist showing what the applicant must have and what is missing from their profile, with one-tap links to complete missing items. When all requirements are satisfied, the Apply button activates with confidence. Secondary actions enable saving jobs to favorites, sharing via the device share sheet, and viewing employer information. All labels, system text, errors, empty states, and notifications are available in English and Spanish, with language selection at first launch and an in-app switcher that refreshes visible copy immediately without requiring an app restart. Employer-entered free text displays as authored. This bilingual architecture ensures CraftCore serves the diverse workforce the trades demand.

Application Status with Deep Links and Privacy-Safe Notifications

CraftCore keeps candidates informed throughout the hiring process through clear status tracking and precise notifications. The Application Status screen displays a list of all submitted applications with current state, job title, employer, location, submitted date, and timestamps. Status values mirror the Employer Web Portal exactly: Submitted, In Review, Shortlisted, Interview Requested, Offer, and Declined. Each application detail shows attachments sent, employer-provided next-step notes, and a chronological timeline of status changes and interview requests displayed in the device’s local time zone. Notifications trigger on key events including application submitted confirmation, status changes, interview requests, and document requests. All notifications are privacy-safe with no sensitive personal details in previews. Deep links route candidates directly to the correct application, interview request, or document screen. Post-login forwarding preserves intent if candidates tap a notification while signed out. Duplicate suppression prevents rapid repeat notifications when status toggles quickly. Mandatory security messages cannot be disabled while non-mandatory categories can be toggled in Settings. This notification architecture ensures candidates never miss important updates while respecting their attention and privacy.

Empowering Employers and Staff with Pipeline Management and Operational Independence

Beyond candidate discovery, we developed comprehensive tools that give employers control over their hiring pipeline and platform staff complete operational control without engineering dependency.

Applications Inbox with Shortlisting, Notes, Tags, and Structured Ratings

The Employer Web Portal provides a comprehensive applications inbox that keeps hiring teams moving at pace. New, Unread, and All tabs organize applications with sorting by received date, job title, or applicant name. Quick filters narrow results by job, status, craft, certifications present, location radius from job site, and documents attached. Saved views per user enable recurring workflows. Result cards display applicant name, craft and level, key certifications, distance to job, resume presence, and verification indicators with one-click actions to view profile, add note, or shortlist. The candidate profile viewer shows complete profile information, documents with preview and download capabilities, and an activity timeline of all interactions. Pipeline statuses include New, Reviewed, Shortlisted, Interview, Offer, Hired, and Declined, with status changes requiring explicit action and optional notes. Structured ratings use a one-to-five scale across categories including Quality, Safety, Productivity, Attendance, Attitude, Reliability, Accountability, Teamwork, Leadership, and Communication with an auto-calculated overall average. Ratings remain internal and never appear to candidates. Internal tags enable custom categorization. Hiring history visibility shows prior interactions with the same organization across previous applications. Bulk actions enable multi-select for shortlisting, moving to interview, or declining with reasons.

Job Posting with One-to-One Filter Parity and Draft Workflows

The Employer Web Portal ensures every job posting is immediately discoverable by qualified candidates through perfect field parity with mobile filters. Posting fields include title, location, craft, craft level, certifications required, hourly wage, per diem, travel pay, project type, duration, hours per week, employment type, industry, benefits, description, and optional attachments. Open shop versus closed shop, shift type, bonuses, education reimbursement, equipment requirements, and years of experience extend the structured field set. All numeric fields validate for appropriate ranges and units. Required fields are clearly indicated with specific inline guidance for validation errors. Draft, Publish, and Archive states enable workflow management with scheduled publishing using date and time pickers. Preview shows exactly how cards and detail screens will render on mobile, including tags and map context. Reusable templates speed recurring roles for common crafts or locations. Organization-level defaults for wage units, benefits boilerplate, and standard notes reduce repetitive entry. Editing a published job updates mobile listings on next refresh with applicants already in the pipeline flagged with an updated job note. This posting system ensures employers invest in accurate descriptions that reach the right candidates.

Employer Verification, Document Review, and Content Moderation

The Administrative Web Application enforces platform quality through comprehensive verification and moderation workflows. Employer verification enables staff to review organization details and supporting documents, then set status to Approved, Pending, or Suspended with required notes. Status changes immediately affect the ability to publish jobs. Applicant document review enables staff to examine identity and certification documents uploaded from mobile, marking items as Verified, Needs Re-Upload, or Rejected with reason. Verification results surface as signals to employers and read-only badges to applicants within one sync cycle. Content moderation provides a queue of new or edited job postings and images when flagged by automated checks or staff, with approve, edit, or reject actions including required reasons. Virus scan status appears for all attachments with unsafe files blocked from download. Immutable audit trails record every sensitive action including actor, timestamp, object, and note. Conflicting decisions from multiple reviewers trigger conflict banners requiring administrator resolution. This trust and safety infrastructure ensures CraftCore maintains the quality both candidates and employers expect.

Taxonomy Management and Analytics Without Developer Dependency

The Administrative Web Application gives staff complete control over the data structures that power mobile search and job detail without requiring code changes or app releases. Taxonomy management covers crafts, craft levels, certifications, benefits, project types, employment types, and industries with create, edit, and deactivate capabilities. Deactivated values hide from new postings but remain visible on historical data. Filter configuration determines which fields appear as facets on mobile and employer search with configurable order and default selections. Acceptable ranges and units for wage, per diem, and distance are adjustable. Search helpers manage synonyms and promoted results for common terms plus city and ZIP seed lists for improved autocomplete. Regional settings configure default wage and distance units and formatting plus timezone baseline for reporting. All taxonomy and configuration changes reflect on mobile at next refresh without requiring client updates. Analytics at MVP display job views, applications submitted, shortlist rate, time to first review, and time to hire with breakdowns by craft, certification requirement, location, recruiter, and job. Date range selectors with presets and custom dates plus CSV export enable leadership reporting. This operational independence ensures CraftCore staff can evolve the platform without engineering bottlenecks.

End-to-End Guidance and Support

Our partnership extended beyond design and development. We served as strategic advisors, helping the founding team make confident decisions about platform architecture, security, and bilingual implementation so CraftCore could serve the skilled trades with the professionalism and trust the industry demands.

  • Security Architecture Protecting Platform Trust

Throughout development, we implemented security measures appropriate for a hiring platform handling identity documents and employment data. Email or phone verification establishes account trust during registration. Two-factor authentication challenges new or untrusted devices before allowing access, with delivery options including SMS and email codes at launch. Biometric unlock with Face ID, Touch ID, or Android fingerprint is offered only after successful two-factor authentication on that specific device. Explicit logout revokes tokens server-side immediately. Password policies enforce minimum strength rules with live strength indicators. Account recovery flows use time-limited deep links that return to the app. In-app account deletion is available with clear instructions, and a reminder that deleting an account does not cancel any external billing arrangements. Administrative access requires strong credentials with role-based permissions separating Administrator and Limited User capabilities. Rate limiting prevents brute force attempts. Documents are stored with signed URLs and time-limited access. This security architecture establishes the trust necessary for candidates to share certifications and employers to evaluate applicants.

  • Bilingual Implementation for Workforce Inclusivity

Together, we designed a bilingual platform that respects the diverse skilled trades workforce. A first-run language picker appears before onboarding with English and Spanish options displayed with native language labels. Selection persists across sessions and devices upon login. An in-app language switcher in Settings enables changing language at any time with immediate refresh of visible copy without requiring app restart. Localization coverage extends to all navigation, form labels, helper text, validation errors, empty states, success banners, and notifications. Date, time, number, and currency formatting follows locale conventions with proper pluralization rules. Transactional email templates for welcome, verification, password reset, employer approval notices, application status updates, and policy messages are maintained in both languages and sent based on user preference. If a translation key is missing, the app falls back to English and logs the missing key for correction. Employer-entered free text displays as authored without automatic translation. This comprehensive bilingual implementation ensures CraftCore serves every qualified tradesperson regardless of language preference.

  • WordPress Marketing Website with Launch Preparation

Beyond the core applications, we developed comprehensive marketing infrastructure to support CraftCore’s launch and growth. A WordPress website provides responsive design across desktop, tablet, and mobile breakpoints with pages including home with clear value propositions for candidates and employers, how it works with step-by-step explanations, about with mission and team information, FAQ and support with searchable help topics and contact forms, blog for thought leadership and SEO content, and legal pages for privacy policy and terms of service. A pre-launch landing page with email capture collected interested user emails before the applications were available, building audience and validating demand. Google Analytics 4 integration enables marketing performance tracking. Yoast SEO optimization improves organic discoverability. UserWay accessibility integration ensures the platform serves users of all abilities. App store badges link to the candidate mobile applications when live. Custom email templates maintain consistent branding across all automated communications. This marketing foundation positions CraftCore for successful launch and sustained growth.

Seamless Collaboration, Every Step of the Way

Our partnership with the CraftCore team was built on shared commitment to transforming skilled trades hiring. Weekly meetings during design phases provided alignment on complex features like the one-to-one filter parity system, the guided profile with document enforcement, the employer pipeline with structured ratings, and the administrative taxonomy management. Bi-weekly meetings during programming ensured development stayed on track while respecting the longer timelines required for bilingual implementation, verification workflows, and comprehensive administrative controls. Figma served as our collaborative design canvas where feedback happened in real time with comments in both English and Spanish flows. Jira tracked every feature and bug through completion while Confluence captured all decisions and documentation for future reference. GitHub stored version-controlled code with complete commit history. A dedicated project manager coordinated across design, development, and quality assurance teams spanning the United States, Brazil, and Pakistan. Comprehensive quality assurance testing covered functional flows, cross-device compatibility, bilingual accuracy, and accessibility touchpoints. The completed platform represents a true partnership in bringing a professional hiring solution to the skilled trades industry.

From Scattered Job Boards to Trusted Hiring Partner: CraftCore's Industry Transformation

  • Faster Discovery

A Platform Where the Right Job Takes Seconds to Find

CraftCore transforms scattered job searching into precise, geo-fenced discovery that respects tradesperson time. Instead of scrolling through generic postings hoping something fits, candidates filter by craft, level, certifications, pay, per diem, travel, schedule, and radius to find relevant roles instantly. A millwright on a job break finds two opportunities worth exploring in under a minute. A pipefitter widening their search discovers travel positions that match their certifications. Clear job detail shows exactly what is required with a checklist that links directly to incomplete profile items. Bilingual support ensures English and Spanish speakers receive the same professional experience. The filter-driven architecture makes the right choice obvious.

  • Qualified Applicants

A Hiring Platform Where Employers See Complete, Verified Profiles

CraftCore delivers value to employers by ensuring every application includes the information needed to make decisions. Guided profiles enforce document uploads and essential information before the Apply button activates. Verification signals indicate when certifications have been reviewed and approved. The applications inbox presents candidates with craft, level, certifications, distance, and resume presence visible at a glance. Structured ratings across quality, safety, productivity, and other categories enable consistent evaluation. Hiring history shows prior interactions so returning candidates are recognized. Pipeline statuses keep teams aligned from submission through hiring. A shutdown manager posting three night-shift welders with TWIC required sees complete, verified profiles rise to the top and has a shortlist ready before the afternoon meeting.

  • Operational Independence

An Administrative Platform That Evolves Without Engineers

The platform we built provides CraftCore staff complete operational control without developer dependency. Employer verification enables approving or suspending organizations with full audit trails. Document review marks certifications as verified, needs re-upload, or rejected with reasons that surface to employers and candidates. Content moderation handles flagged postings through a clean queue. Taxonomy management creates, edits, and deactivates crafts, levels, certifications, industries, and other values that power filters and posting. An administrator adds a new certification in the morning and it appears in employer posting and mobile filters that same afternoon. Filter order and search synonyms adjust without code changes. Analytics track job views, applications, shortlist rates, and time to hire with date and category breakdowns. This independence ensures CraftCore can respond to market needs at the pace the industry demands.
